Sleeping Giant

Sleeping Giant

Dear Friends of Sleeping Giant,

We are sad to announce that we have made the decision to not open for the 24/25 Winter Season.

We recognize that this will be a huge disappointment for many in our community and we share that sentiment, however after speaking with staff we feel this is the most responsible choice.

As you know we faced a lack of snow last winter, a small flood this spring, and most recently vandalism to our Big Horn lift in August involving the brand-new communication line that we purchased for it the previous year.  None of these problems are insurmountable, but taken together with the need to hire many seasonal staff made it clear that rushing to try to get open for the season did not make sense.

Instead, we will use this time to focus on repairs and improvements at the mountain. This will include interior repairs and upgrades to the lodge where we are considering plans to change the layout of the rental shop and ski patrol rooms. Additionally, we plan to focus on additional training for our staff. A couple of key members of our team will likely be attending Resort Management Training focused on the ski industry put on by a major West Coast University, and we will be training up our new outdoor maintenance team on the lifts and snow cats. Ownership will also be focused on furthering discussions with several potential strategic partners for the mountain’s long-term development.

We will be refunding all season passholders who rolled their passes over to the 24/25 winter season. Please watch your emails that are linked to your season pass account.   We will be sending an email confirming your mailing address and mailing out refund checks after addresses are confirmed. A follow up email will then be sent when the checks are sent out. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jonathan at gm@skisg.com.

Additionally, if you received a gift pass from SG ownership or a gift pass as part of a donation from Sleeping Giant those passes will rollover to our next winter season 25/26.

We have also been in touch with the Park County Travel Council regarding the grant we received from them that helped fund some of our trail expansion and the tubing park.  We let them know that we are prepared to return these funds if they are not comfortable providing us with a one year window to get reopened.

We would also like to thank our friends at the Shoshone National Forest Service.  We are grateful for your help and support during this time;  we couldn’t ask for a better landlord. We would also like to thank our neighbors at Red Lodge who have told us they are ready to work with any employees of SG seeking employment this winter. Please reach out to Jonathan if you would like our support or recommendation at Red Lodge. One of the really good things to come out of this unfortunate turn of events at SG is our new relationship with Red Lodge.  We are hopeful to launch some joint pass programs with them in 25/26.

We are proud of our work at Sleeping Giant and the large number of improvements we have made since taking it over.  While we are gutted to be out of play this winter, we are looking  toward the future with optimism. Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last few months.  It is  at these times that we remember why we decided to take a chance and try to wrangle a Giant.

Sincerely,

Sleeping Giant Ownership & Staff
